Château Cheval Blanc 2018 - 1st Great Cru Class A
Located in the commune of Saint-Emilion, but on the border of the Pomerol territory, the estate covers 39 hectares divided into forty-five parcels which are all small vineyards with their own unique identity. This specificity shapes the complexity of the Cheval Blanc wine.
Château Cheval Blanc is one of the rare properties in a single block where the parcel of land has been almost identical for almost a century and a half. The estate has had the same configuration since 1871, and more than 90% of the current land corresponds to the 1911 surface area. Continuity also in terms of grape varieties: in 1911, the proportion of Cabernet Franc was already close to 50%.
A singular terroir, essentially composed of clay and coarse gravel on some parcels, finer and sandier on others. Some properties in Saint-Emilion have excellent gravelly soils; others, in Saint-Emilion or Pomerol, benefit from very good clayey soils. It is a pure coincidence of history that at Cheval Blanc, these two types of soil coexist in roughly equal proportions. To this natural richness is added an original grape variety, made up of 52% Cabernet Franc, 43% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Thus, each parcel has its own characteristics by which it is identified, characteristics related to its age, its surface area, the nature of its soil, its rootstock and its grape variety.

Tasting commentary of Château Cheval Blanc - March 2019
The robe is deep, of an intense red. The nose is dominated by a superb floral and fruity note, evoking raspberry and violet. When aired, the fruit expresses itself more intensely with aromas of black cherries, blackberries and blackcurrants. The ever-present flowers develop around rose and lilac. Balsamic and spicy notes complete the already complex nose with aromas of cocoa beans and black pepper. This nose impresses by its freshness, its complexity, its brightness, its precision. The attack on the palate is sumptuous: voluminous and full. The tannic richness of this wine impresses by its power, and also by its smoothness. The structure is continuous, deep, long, firm, perfectly enveloping and refined. The very racy structure is prolonged on an interminable, crunchy finish, which retains its freshness. The aromatic return is floral and fruity, with a spicy note. The balance and definition of this wine are worthy of the greatest vintages of the property.
