Château Le Pin 2022
A legendary and benchmark wine.
Located in the heart of the Pomerol plateau, not far from Château Trotanoy and Petrus, Le Pin has been owned by Jacques Thienpont since 1979. The vineyard is composed of seven plots covering only 2 hectares. Le Pin is a wine composed exclusively of Merlot and produced in very limited quantities.
It grows on a terroir of sand, clay, and gravel with traces of iron that perfectly complement Merlot. It produces an average of 6,000 bottles each year, which are snapped up by collectors, connoisseurs, and wine aesthetes.
Pruning is rigorous, with very little treatment, and grape selection is draconian. The juices are fermented and macerated in seven stainless steel vats for two weeks, then aged in new oak barrels for 18 to 24 months, completely renewed each year.
A new winery, designed by Belgian architect Paul Robbrecht, was inaugurated in 2011.
These are intense wines, marked by notes of new oak and smoke (toast, mocha), black fruits (blackcurrant), and exotic spices. But they are also silky and delicate: they are considered haute couture, with excellent aging potential (from 10 to 50 years).
This is "one of the most exotic, concentrated, and spectacular vintages in Bordeaux."

The 2022 Le Pin was certainly more closed than the L'Hêtre or L'If upon initial taste, so I gave my decanted glass another decant, pouring from one glass to another several times. That helped to reveal a very perfumed bouquet with black cherries, raspberry, hints of cigar humidor and a light anise scent in the background.
This has razor-sharp delineation. The palate boasts a silky texture on the entry that immediately caresses the mouth. There is very fine depth here, displaying a mixture of red and black fruit mixed with marmalade and allspice as it fans out wonderfully toward the finish.
If you intend to drink this, a) decant it, and b) invite me. Otherwise, cellar this for several years before broaching.

The 2022 Le Pin is a very pretty, sexy wine. The richness of the year is evident in the wine's super-ripe profile and textural feel. Blackberry jam, spice, apricot, black tea, new leather, chocolate and a kiss of French oak build in a sumptuous, potent Pomerol.
The 2022 will need time to be at its best. To be sure, extreme heat and drought do not present the most optimal conditions for an early-ripening variety such as Merlot, especially on gravel.
The 2022 is a decidedly exotic Le Pin and a wine that will thrill hedonists.
