Domaine de Chevalier - White 2019

A Terroir A great wine is always born in extreme conditions...

One might think that the terroir of Chevalier is difficult, capricious... But it is exceptional and capable of producing a remarkably early harvest, provided that it is treated with the respect it deserves...                                                                                                            We can say that a great wine is always born in extreme conditions, on a difficult terroir, and even, paradoxically, that it is from this difficult character that it draws its greatness...

Located in Léognan, capital of the Graves region, the Domaine de Chevalier Blanc watches over a unique vineyard of 5 hectares of white vines. It is planted on soils of black sand and fine white gravel resting on an ideally drained clay-gravel subsoil.

The 2019 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc, aged in 35% new oak, has a divine bouquet of mirabelle plum and (again) that hint of kaffir lime, displaying wonderful minerality and energy.

The palate is very well balanced with fine salinity, good concentration, a bit more weight toward the finish than I remember from last year, and a tartness that brings energy.

Gains complexity with airing. Noble, refined and classy, this is a Domaine de Chevalier from the top drawer.

The 2019 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc is a rich, powerful wine. Candied lemon, dried flowers, marzipan, sage and mint open up.

In 2019, the Blanc has a distinct orchard fruit and savory character. Ultimately, it seems a bit heavy and lacks freshness.

That said, the Blanc has a reputation for developing beautifully for decades, so let's see what happens. I have to say I expected more energy and delineation.
