Château Mouton Rothschild 2019 - 1st Cru Class

Château Mouton Rothschild has 90 hectares of vines to the northwest of Bordeaux, on the edge of the Médoc peninsula, itself situated, as its name indicates, in medio aquae, in the middle of the waters: to the east the Gironde estuary, to the west the Atlantic Ocean.

The Médoc vineyard, which dates back to Roman times, currently covers an area of about 16,500 hectares. It is planted on a narrow strip of land 80 km long and 5 to 10 km wide, close to the river which irrigates it deeply and moderates temperature variations. Leaning against the northern tip of the Landes forest, it benefits from the mild oceanic climate while being protected from its excesses.

Formed of "gravel", pebbles and gravels that retain the heat of the sun, mixed with sands partly clayey. Produces the greatest wines in the world! The lean and poor gravel descends several meters deep, resting on a marly-limestone base. Elegant, powerful, tannin-rich red wines are harvested here, which can be kept for a long time.

The Petit Mouton, the second wine of the château, is a very nice variation. A great white wine, named Aile d'Argent, is also produced in AOC Bordeaux.

Opaque purple-black in color, the 2019 Mouton Rothschild simply shines, even at this very nascent stage, radiating from the glass with bright, vibrant scents of creme de cassis, blueberry preserves, boysenberry and black raspberry, as well as fragrant suggestions of lilac, dark chocolate, sandalwood, jasmine tea and wood smoke with a spicy blast of star anise.

The medium-bodied palate shines with energy, with tight layers of dark fruit, exotic spice and mineral notions framed by exquisitely ripe, fine tannins and bags of freshness, finishing with epic length and perfume. The profound expression of this year is undoubtedly a legend in the making.

                    Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, June 2020

It's incredibly complex, with all the descriptors of cabernet, from mint and lead pencil to blackberry, cassis and menthol. It changes all the time in the glass, just as it does on the nose. Yet it remains fresh and classy. Full-bodied, with very fine, tight tannins that run the length of the wine, going on and on. Well-structured and compact wine. Uninterrupted procession of currants, berries and black cherries, along with licorice, earth and a hint of black truffle.

Give it until 2028 to show its true greatness.
