Château Smith Haut Lafitte 2020 - Red
This 2020 vintage of Smith Haut Lafitte will celebrate the 655th anniversary of the Château, as well as the 30th harvest of its current owners, Florence and Daniel Cathiard. And will be dressed in a label of light.
Smith Haut Lafite's vineyard covers 80 hectares in a single block. The estate owes its reputation as the "most Graves of the Graves" to the smoky notes that characterize its wines as well as to its hills (Laffite or Lafite in old French) of pebbles and semi-precious stones, deposited by the Garonne River millions of years ago.
Made up of Gunzian gravel, the Château's soil offers two astonishing characteristics: a natural drainage of the soil which forces the roots of the vines to draw water and mineral salts from more than six meters below ground and a "mirror effect" of the sun, which, by reflecting on the pebbles composing the gravel, contributes to the ripening of the grapes.
In 2019, the Château obtains the Organic Agriculture Label, after 3 years of conversion.
The estate produces a second wine, Les Hauts de Smith red, also declined in white.

Comments from Fabien Teitgen, Technical Director of Château Smith Haut Lafite
The color is very dark red, almost black, with bluish reflections. The nose is very expressive with notes of fresh red and black fruits. With agitation, a wider aromatic palette is revealed, with spicy notes of star anise, licorice and empyreumatic notes, very terroir, graphite, pencil lead.
The mouth attack is very wide with a massive and powerful side. Then the unctuousness and the well defined texture impose themselves in a wine all in balance, between matter and softness, between opulence and freshness. The length in the mouth is supported by a great tannic structure (from the Cabernet Sauvignon, remarkable this year), well coated by the ripe matter of the Merlots.
The mouth is also very aromatic with great complex expressions of fruit, mixed with sweet spices, tobacco leaf, graphite and licorice notes.
