Château Cos D'Estournel 2020 - 2nd Cru Class

This 2020 vintage celebrates the 200th anniversary of Cos d'Estournel, but also the 20th anniversary of its owner, Michel Reybier, at the head of this second growth. A new screen-printed label will be specially dedicated to this vintage.

Today, the 100 hectares of Cos d'Estournel are composed of a mosaic of a multitude of parcels. Two-thirds of the vineyards are planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest with Merlot, and a small proportion with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

With an average age of 45 years, the Cos d'Estournel vineyard contains some very old vines, many between 80 and 100 years old, which represent an incomparable opportunity for the property. These old vines bring depth and structure to the wine and reflect the complexity of the soil from which they draw their deepest elements. The Grand Vin de Cos d'Estournel is made with grapes from vines that are an average of 55 years old.

The estate produces a second wine, Pagodes de Cos.

Since the 2006 vintage, the estate has produced Cos d'Estournel white, a concentrated and fat wine, very typical of Sauvignon, with its notes of lemongrass and grapefruit. And since the 2019 vintage, the property declines its Second wine in white with Pagodes de Cos Blanc.

Château comment:

The 2020 vintage reveals a breathtaking harmony between extraordinary richness and surprising freshness. Resolutely powerful in its expressions of black fruits, nutmeg, black tea, and spices, it is also endowed with great vivacity, thanks to its minerality. With its opulent sweetness balanced by unprecedented energy, Cos d'Estournel 2020 is a true model of terroir expression.

Yves Beck: 98-100/100

From the outset Cos announces subtlety and complexity on the olfactory level. It displays inviting notes of blueberries and black cherries as well as hints of licorice and finally a refreshing touch of peppermint. The attack is like the nose: elegant and fine. Slightly creamy and even suave character.

The wine quickly shows fullness and concentration, while the tannins slowly reveal themselves on the finish. Cos is powerful, tannic and racy. It manages to convey the notion of quiet strength to this power that is ideally countered, or complemented, by the liveliness of the acid structure. Fruity, precise and persistent finish.
