Château L’Evangile 2020
L'Évangile is a Bordeaux house located on the famous plateau of Pomerol. It is within this natural laboratory that the terroir and the sky bring a new lesson for each vintage. "
Saskia de Rothschild
It is by one of those mysteries of geology that, to the south-east of the Pomerol plateau, a curious accident brings to the surface a long line of gravel. Three vineyards, including L'Évangile, share this rare land.
The estate occupies a privileged position: it is bordered to the north by the vines of Château Pétrus and is only separated to the south from Cheval Blanc in Saint-Emilion by a secondary road.
The surface area is 22 hectares of sandy-clay soil with pure gravel and a subsoil marked by iron dross. The associated grape varieties are Merlot (80%) which brings fruit, body and flesh, and gives the wine its inimitable suppleness and the "Bouchet" (20%), for finesse and structure.
Second wine, Le Blason de L'Evangile.

The sculpting of L'Evangile that began in recent vintages continues, and the 2020 is a gorgeous wine. Immaculate, silky fruit with a hint of menthol. It soars on the palate, both dense and light, with blueberry and raspberry fruit, and pulses of bitter almond and honeysuckle on the finish that gives concentration and spice.
Juliette Couderc joined L'Evangile (from DBR Lafite's Long Dai winery) in September 2020 so to harvest this wine, working alongside technical director Olivier Tregoat. 50% first wine, with no Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend this year because it was so over-concentrated that it had too much impact.
Increased selective harvesting required six passes through the plots to bring in the grapes as they matured. In its final year of organic conversion, the upcoming 2021 vintage will therefore be certified.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 L'Evangile emerges effortlessly from the glass with notions of blackberry, black raspberry and red and black plum compote, as well as suggestions of Indian spice, dusty earth and violet with a touch of iron ore.
The medium to full-bodied palate has compelling freshness and fine-grained texture to support the muscular black and red fruits, and finishes long and earthy.
