Château Pontet Canet 2020 - 5th Cru Class
Located in the commune of Pauillac, the vineyard covers 81 hectares... The soul of Pontet-Canet is the "Plateau", a ridge of Garonnaise gravel from the Günz which rests on a limestone base. This lean, well-drained soil fosters the demanding character of the Cabernet Sauvignon, the signature of the great Pauillacs.
Planted in the center of the hillside, the Cabernet Franc brings tannic nobility and finesse. On the periphery of the plateau, a few Merlot vines occupy the clay and gravel soils, sometimes more chalky.
After five years of conversion, the property obtains in 2010, its certification in organic and biodynamic viticulture. All the plots are ploughed with the help of 10 horses, so as not to compact the soil, while the vines receive "homeopathic" doses of treatments, notably based on plants from the estate.
This perfect autonomy has been recognized since 2014 by the complementary Demeter label.
Three parcels located on the edge of the croup have been planted with Petit Verdot. This grape variety gives incredible wines by giving spicy aromas.
Over the past 10 years, the knowledge of the terroirs of the domain has become more intimate. This understanding can be done through pedology but science provides only part of the answer. At Pontet-Canet, the sensitivity of the soils is judged by glass in hand, by tasting the wines and by a constant presence in the vineyard. Practice has sublimated theory
Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, May 2021
The 2020 Pontet-Canet is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, aging in 50% new French oak barrels, 35% concrete amphorae, and 15% one-year-old barrels.
Opaque purple-black in color, it needs significant aeration and swirling to bring out evocative notes of black cherry jam, raspberry pie, black currant pastilles and damp earth, before launching into gorgeous floral and spicy notions of red rose, cinnamon stick, star anise and cardamom, with a hint of crushed rocks.
The medium to full-bodied palate reveals plenty of depth and polish, offering mouth-coating red and black fruits with plenty of perfumed earth and floral sparkle, all framed by velvety tannins and seamless freshness, for a long, mineral finish.
This is a singular and compelling expression of the vintage and comes highly recommended!
