Château Margaux 2020 - 1st Great Cru Class

The Grand Vin of Château Margaux has been recognized, since the 17th century, as one of the greatest wines in the world.

Château Margaux 2019 is one of the excellent vintages and is added to the list of precious wines that we have the chance to mature in this decade: 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 at present .

It is the first time in its history that the Premier Grand Cru Classé de Margaux marks a vintage with a unique presentation in homage to Paul Pontallier, who died too soon in March 2016. The 2015 vintage is the last one made under his direction.

Château Margaux represents 37% of the harvest.

The great wine of Château Margaux 2019 will be the first to take full advantage of the new facilities in the second year winery whose construction was initiated by André Mentzelopoulos at the end of the 1970s. Following numerous interventions over the years, a major refreshment work was required and we are delighted to complete it just as his grandson, Alexis Leven-Mentzelopoulos, joins the Château Margaux team. Together with his sister Alexandra Petit-Mentzelopoulos, they now embody the future of the estate ... (April 2020)

Château Margaux also offers a white wine of extraordinary quality (Pavillon Blanc), as well as a second wine of great elegance (Pavillon Rouge).

Neal Martin, vinous.com, June 2021

The 2020 Chateau Margaux, tasted again at the chateau, is a bit more open on the nose, revealing even more of its amazing delineation, so pixilated. Black cherries, blueberries and perhaps a little more red fruit than in the sample tasted in the UK, in a more classic style.

The palate is harmonious and balanced, with an ethereal delineation, building on the palate to an almost pixelated finish that is quite compelling. There is an increased minerality over the previous sample with surprising persistence. I suspect this is a Left Bank where the 2020 will outperform the previous two vintages, but as Philippe Bascaule himself commented, this is a wine for his children rather than for himself.

It is even better than the sample sent to the UK, hence my higher score. Will it reach perfection? We will know soon.
