Château Coutet 2020 - 1st Great Cru Class
Château Coutet, celebrated by Thomas Jefferson as "the best Sauternes in Barsac", was born in an old English fortress of the 13th century. Since 1977, the Baly family has been the embodiment of this great wine, which bears its name well: derived from the Gascon word for "knife", "coutet" evokes the unique style of the wines, marked by their sharpness, vivacity, freshness and nervousness.
The terroir of Barsac, particularly at Château Coutet, is clay-limestone, which retains water. The cold soils slow down the maturation of the grapes.
The vines return the freshness of the soil to produce this rich and lively wine, with aromas of white flowers, citrus, honey and vanilla when young.
TASTING COMMENTS
2020 is an extremely fine vintage. The first tastings of Coutet show a particularly fresh wine, marked by floral notes of lily of the valley and grapefruit blossoms, and a liveliness on the palate that is typical of Coutet's terroirs in Barsac.
