Château Angelus 2018 - 1st Great Cru Class A

Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, President and CEO of Angelus, represents the 8th generation of the de Boüard de Laforest family and now embodies Angelus.

A great terroir is more complex than one might imagine. It's not just the soil, the earth, its natural ability to drain and retain moisture (limestone, clay), and its proportion of different elements that will make it warm or cold, rich or poor, balanced or deficient. It's also its exposure—in cirques, hillsides, and foothills—that defines small places and makes them exceptional. At Angélus, the vineyard is located in a natural amphitheater on the southern coast and foothills of Saint-Emilion, which concentrates warm temperatures in summer and increases precocity. The soil is naturally drained by the slope.

The good distribution of limestone and clay, between 8 and 20%, ensures a regular supply of water and minerals. The rootstocks are ideally suited to the terroir, and the grape varieties are distributed according to the soil: Merlot on the hillside (more clayey) and Cabernet Franc in high proportion (46% of the grapes) on the clay-limestone soils at the foot of the hill.

All these characteristics contribute to the style of Angelus.

Château Angelus offers a second wine, "Carillon d'Angelus" and "N°3 d'Angelus." Not to mention the new addition, "Tempo d'Angelus."

2018 VINTAGE, THE PHOENIX

Magnificent fresh Merlots, a selection of very old Cabernet Franc on clay-limestone soils, a gentle extraction make this vintage a very great Château Angélus. A deep color attracts the eye. A perfect aromatic purity combined with notes of black fruits charm the nose. In the mouth, a slight sweetness gives way to an elegant tension with refined, velvety tannins. The alcohol (below 2010) and the wood are perfectly integrated.

The finish is persistent, carried by the elegance of the Cabernet Franc, by the purity of the fruit and punctuated by delicate spicy notes. It is to celebrate these moments when nature takes surprising paths, when linear time opens up to that, dear to the myth, of the eternal return, that all the bottles of this memorable vintage have been stamped with the figure of the legendary bird that signs eternity.
