Château Figeac 2020 - 1st Great Cru Class B

Unique, recognizable, distinguished, CHATEAU-FIGEAC expresses all the elegance of great Bordeaux.

Château-Figeac owes its singular character to the unique combination of three gravelly hillsides with clay subsoils, several microclimates and a grape variety composed of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.

This original blend, dominated by 2/3 Cabernet, gives the wine structure, finesse, freshness and smoothness. Since the beginning of this century, the wine of Château-Figeac knows how to make itself available from its first years with a touch of caressing in the mouth without losing its incomparable verticality over the years. Its longevity over several decades proves to be exceptional, with an inimitable and complex bouquet that reveals itself over time.

This great wine is distinguished by a rich nose and a beautiful aromatic complexity. In the mouth, the Cabernet Sauvignon reveals, in the youth of the wine, a beautiful floral aspect accompanied by a great structure when it gets older. The Cabernet Franc brings a lot of finesse in the tannins and the Merlot brings roundness and body. The attack is frank, the matter silky, the complexity elegant.

Since the 1945 vintage, Château Figeac has produced a second wine, created by Thierry Manoncourt.  Renamed Petit-Figeac from the 2012 vintage.

Neal Martin, vinous.com, May 2021

The 2020 Figeac was harvested from September 4 to October 1 and vinified without SO2. Deep purple in color, it is initially backward and sultry on the nose, needing 60 minutes to really open up.

It then reveals intense flavors of cranberry, raspberry and hints of cassis mixed with white pepper. Since Cabernets make up 63% of the blend, this wine has a typical Left Bank personality, but with a Right Bank precociousness.

The palate conveys a sense of vitality and vigor on entry, with a hint of black pepper and allspice mingling with the mix of red and black fruits. The tannins have a satiny texture, and there are black fruits and notes of pencil lead and black truffle shavings toward the Pomerol-like finish. This is a gorgeous Figeac from head winemaker Frederic Faye and his team.
