Château Palmer 2020 - 3rd Cru Class

During this particular year of 2020, this time has been suspended, forcing us to put some of our activities on hold. But it has also forced us to focus on the essential: cultivating the vineyard, listening to and observing our environment in order to live fully and completely in agricultural time.

In the wake of an outstanding 2018 and a deeply elegant 2019, the 2020 vintage of Château Palmer completes, with race and voluptuousness, a trilogy of exception.

In the heart of Margaux, 66 hectares of gravel and grassland staring the Gironde. Between this soil rich of its secular histories and its skies with hourly microclimate. One terroir, three grape varieties: the horizon of Château Palmer.

Thomas Duroux's commitment to the environment goes far beyond biodynamics, tested in 2008 and then generalized in 2014 to the entire vineyard: Palmer has metamorphosed into an agricultural farm, welcoming cows in its meadows and sheep in its vineyards that naturally fertilize an exceptional terroir.

It includes three pillars: carbernet sauvignon and merlot in equal parts, complemented by a touch of petit verdot. An exception. And a rule: the grape variety does not determine the quality of the wine, it influences it by its own characteristics.

Jean-Marc Quarin, April 2021

Dark, intense and black color. Intense, fine, subtle, complex and noble nose. Nuances of ink, black fruits. Creamy touch reminiscent of Pomerol. With agitation, it changes again and even reminds of Syrah.

Crystal clear on the entry, extremely aromatic in the middle, fat, ample, melting and quite overwhelming, the wine gains energy before finishing long, complex and very tasty. Wow!

Neal Martin, vinous.com, June 2021

The 2020 Palmer, which was aged in 65% new oak, has one of the most perfumed bouquets of the vintage with beguiling and seductive scents of black cherry, wild strawberry, iodine and crushed violet, all beautifully delineated (as usual).

The palate is medium-bodied with fine but fairly firm tannins, giving this Palmer more backbone than presumed. Blackberry, graphite and hints of licorice develop with aeration to an assertive, pencil box-tinged finish that nods to Pauillac.

This is a Palmer destined for long aging. This is a serious Palmer, very different from the previous two vintages, not a mix of the two, but content to be itself.
